Treatment planning computers
are specialized platforms to calculate dosages to patients from linear
accelerator treatment machines and isotopes used in treatment. Specialty
systems are designed to be used for stereotactic treatment systems (SRS) and
high dose rate isotope delivery systems (HDR).
Medical physicists are
required at the research and manufacturer level to develop the algorithms used
in the calculation process. In the field, medical physicist input measured data
used by the planning system to calculate the dosage.
Furthermore, the physicist
will insure the validity of the results obtained when using the system. Often,
the physicist will specify the constraints on the use of the data, so that the
use of the system will provide accurate results.
