Film Dosimetry

Film blackens with radiation exposure and is used to measure radiation distributions.

Often a ready pack film (film in a light tight paper package) is sandwiched in between two solid water slabs and exposed to a radiation beam to determine the accuracy of the planning computer in predicting the radiation delivery to the patient.

Frequently used in IMRT treatments in which the radiation dose distribution is a complicated sum of many individual beamlets. The irradiated film is developed and read by a film densitometer. The intensity distribution is fed into a computer and compared with the expected radiation distribution.
